Concrete Driveway Thickness: How Deep Should Your Slab Be?


When installing or replacing a driveway, getting the depth right from day one is essential. Concrete provides incredible compressive strength, but it relies on uniform ground support. A slab poured too thin will crack, shift, and fail under wheel loads, while pouring too thick wastes materials and labour.

Whether you are replacing an old gravel track or pouring a brand-new surface, this guide breaks down the correct slab depth, sub-base requirements, and key factors that determine how deep your driveway should be.

What Is the Standard Concrete Driveway Thickness?

For most UK residential properties, 100mm (approximately 4 inches) is the standard minimum thickness for a concrete driveway. This depth is suitable for everyday domestic traffic, including standard family cars, hatchbacks, and medium SUVs.

However, 100mm is only adequate if the ground beneath is properly prepared. A 100mm slab carrying a 2-tonne car requires a solid, compacted sub-base to prevent flexing. If you select the right grade of concrete for driveway installations—typically an air-entrained mix like PAV1 or a robust C30/C35—100mm will deliver decades of service under normal residential use.

When Should You Pour a 150mm (6-Inch) Slab?

While 100mm handles regular domestic vehicles, there are several situations where upgrading to a 150mm (6-inch) slab is necessary:

  • Heavier Vehicles: If your driveway will accommodate motorhomes, caravans, commercial trade vans (such as Ford Transits or Mercedes Sprinters), or horseboxes, a 150mm slab is recommended to spread the increased axle loads.
  • Delivery & Service Vehicles: If fuel tankers, skip lorries, or building supply trucks need to turn around or reverse onto your driveway, a 100mm slab risks cracking under the point load.
  • Poor or Shifting Ground Conditions: If your property sits on soft clay soil that shrinks and swells with seasonal moisture changes, a thicker slab—reinforced with steel mesh—provides the stiffness needed to bridge weak spots.

The Anatomy of a Solid Driveway: Layer by Layer

A concrete driveway is not just a slab laid on bare soil. A durable installation consists of three distinct layers, each playing an essential role in preventing settlement and cracking:

1. Sub-Base Preparation (MOT Type 1)

Pouring directly onto soil or uncompacted hardcore will cause the slab to crack over time. A layer of 100mm to 150mm of MOT Type 1 aggregate must be laid and compacted in layers using a vibrating plate compactor. To prevent the aggregate from sinking into softer subsoils, lay a permeable geotextile membrane underneath the sub-base.

2. Damp-Proof Membrane (DPM) or Slip Membrane

Before placing the concrete, install a heavy-gauge polythene membrane (typically 1200 gauge) over the compacted stone. This prevents the dry sub-base from drawing moisture out of the fresh concrete too quickly (which weakens the slab) and stops rising moisture from affecting the slab during winter freeze-thaw cycles.

Do You Need Steel Reinforcement at 100mm or 150mm?

Adding reinforcement increases the tensile strength of the slab, helping prevent temperature cracks from expanding:

  • 100mm Slabs: For standard passenger vehicle drives, polypropylene structural fibres added directly to the ready-mix truck provide good crack resistance. If you prefer steel, an A142 reinforcing mesh positioned centrally in the slab will suffice.
  • 150mm Slabs: For heavy-duty driveways, steel fabric mesh (such as A193 or A252) is strongly recommended. The mesh must be elevated on plastic or concrete spacers (mesh chairs) so it sits roughly 50mm up from the bottom of the pour, ensuring it remains fully embedded within the concrete.

Summary Checklist Before You Pour

  1. Measure your total excavation depth: For a 100mm slab over 100mm of sub-base, excavate at least 200mm below finished driveway height (keeping the driveway at least 150mm below the property’s damp proof course).
  2. Account for falls and drainage: Ensure a cross-fall or longitudinal fall of at least 1:60 or 1:80 directing surface water toward a soakaway or linear channel drain.
  3. Match depth to vehicle weight: Stick to 100mm for standard cars, and upgrade to 150mm if you operate vans, motorhomes, or commercial vehicles.
